Dear Rose # 29 - Why yoga stays with you (even in the emergency department)

Rose is an amalgam of us - women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond who are looking for somewhere they are seen, heard and listened to.

Dear Rose,

I think I told you how much I was looking forward to the Easter long weekend? I’ve really been needing a big rest, so I was counting down the days. It seems the universe decided to help me along, because on the Tuesday before Easter, I ended up in ED.

I’ve been battling a sinus infection for a while, and on Tuesday morning I woke up with a tight chest, just feeling "off." I went to the GP; he ran several tests and then sent me straight to the Emergency Department just to be safe. I was ushered in immediately because they were worried about my heart.

Turns out, it was my lungs. I have walking pneumonia and was sent home with antibiotics. Two days later, I was feeling even worse than I did on Tuesday, despite complete bed rest and the meds. So, it was back to ED.

It was kind of strange, but the doctor there said, “Emma Polette... how do I know that name?”

I said, “Um, I’m a yoga teacher?”

He said, “That’s it! I know you from back when I was on Facebook.”

(It seems this "no social media" thing really is a thing.)

He told me he does yoga online and rates it so much. “It changes you,” he said, “and it stays with you, too.” Although what he said was non-specific, I understood exactly what he meant. He prescribed some additional antibiotics, and I’m feeling confident that things will change for me soon, too.

Love, Em xx
